Sims 2

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so now that Sims 4 is in the horizon, I've finally convinced myself that maybe enough people have used Sims 2 mods that weren't really sneaky things out to wreck your machine and kill your game, that I feel comfortable looking into them.

Is it SimPE that gets used all the time? Really, I just want to be able to end relationships on an amicable note instead of "I hate you forever!!!!!11!!" or even allow for casual relationships that can exist without getting slapped in the face for flirting with someone within eyesight of someone else you've flirted with. Also, if my old people could have hair colors other than gray without having to add custom content, that'd be awesome (because I'm still wary of custom content).

So, if SimPE is what I want...talk to me like I'm a child and explain what I need to do to get it. And if there's another reputable mod thing that I want...please do the same.

Also, I aged up an NPC and sent them to college. Her lifetime aspiration is still to "Grow Up" but she has the current status of Don Juan, as if she is a romance sim. Is that just a thing that happens with NPCs? And if I get her some Renu-Yu Porta-chug or use the the...reward that let's you change aspirations...will that set her on a real aspiration path?

1. You don't want SimPE unless you're making custom content, seriously modding your neighborhood, or trying to fix something in the game.

2. You want ACR for casual relationships. It's reputable, I promise: http://www.simbology.com/smf/index.php?topic=19.0

3. I've never heard of a hack for elders having non-gray hair without custom hair, sorry.

4. What kind of NPC?/maybe, but I'm not sure, since that can sometimes be a sign of a neighborhood being broken.

SimPE is mostly for creating your own custom content.

Okay, important information firstest. 1) Mods are for changing the way the game works. 2) Objects, such as furniture, appliances, art, basically anything that sits there until a sim interacts with it, are regular Custom Content. 3) Walls and Floors are another class. 4) Hair, jewelry, skin colors and clothing are yet another class.

Mods are mostly likely to corrupt your game when you install multiple mods which conflict with one another. A single mod on its own is no problem. Installing two mods that modify the same game behavior can be a problem. Read all documentation closely. It will often mention that the mod you are interested in conflicts with Other Popular Mod.

You do not need any special content to add walls, floors, hair, jewelry, clothing, new skins and eyes, etc. And new wall and floor colors are the absolute safest thing you can put in your game.

If you wish to download furniture, appliances, art, recolors of Maxis objects, etc., you will need the CEP, or Color Enable Package by Numenor. It is available at Mod the Sims site. It won't conflict with anything. It is the thing that allowed players to create recolors in the first place. All it does is enable recolors to show up in the game and be usable. (It also fixes the colors of a few objects that Maxis broke with various expansion packs, so yay!) CEP comes with an installer.

For other CC, just download, decompress (most CC is uploaded as .rar or .zip files) and drop in C:\\MyDocuments\EAGames\TheSims2\Downloads. I suggest though that you make subdirectories from the start. In the Downloads folder, create subfolders for Build Mode, Buy Mode, Body Shop, Mods, etc. (or whatever folders you may find useful) and sort your downloads into them from the start. Once you start using CC, you may love it and download tons and you'll save yourself trouble later by being organized from the start.

If you want amicability, you probably want Autonomous Casual Romance, or ACR. It has many options, though, and the major one is to allow sims to choose when to woohoo and who with. However, there are many settings and you can turn ACR autonomy off. Read the documentation (or manual, I forget which it's called) thoroughly.

The only way to get hair colors other than grey for elders is to download CC hair. Mod the Sims has tons of hairs. You'll have to download them and stick them in your game to find out whether they're worth keeping though. (Some hairs look a lot better in screen shots than they do in game. And some of them just suck.)

For your NPC, make a backup of the neighborhood and put in a safe place, like your desktop. Start the game, have her use a Renu-Yu PortaChug or the RenuYu Senso Orb and see if it fixes her. If not, you can delete your neighborhood folder and restore from the saved version on your desktop.

If RenuYu doesn't fix her, try the FFS Lot Debugger from moreawesomethanyou.com. I never had the EP that allows growing up townies, but if anything has a quick, easy fix for a bugged Grown-UP NPC, it'll probably be the Lot Debugger (also known as the bat box.) It also has options to fix other common errors, like jewelry flashing blue and the First Born effect. Download, add to Download folder, start game, find Batbox in Misc./Misc. in the Buy Mode catalog, plop on lot. Right or Left click batbox for options. Also, read the manual and the debugger thread at moreawesomethanyou. The batbox will not mess up your game so long as you use it properly.

If the batbox doesn't have a fix for grown-up NPCs, start checking the forums at Mod the Sims and moreawesomethanyou for a fix.

As reassurance, I played Sims 2 intensively for years and downloaded tons of CC. If you make sure your mods don't conflict, you shouldn't have problems. Just remember to backup your neighborhoods before you add any new mods or hacks. If something does go wrong, you can delete the mod and restore your neighborhood from your backup.
