See, that's part of what makes you upsetting and a little scary. The only thing separating the person you might apologize to from the person you won't is familiarity. The stranger is still a person. They're still human. You not personally knowing them doesn't make them something else or something less.

Your example doesn't work for people who aren't like you.

Well, yeah. Familiar people I have to spend time with. I have to be civil to them so they'll be civil to me because we'll interact again as ourselves. Strangers could be anybody, what do I care? Do you feel sad when you read obituaries?

DA

Yeah, I actually do feel sad when I read obituaries. That's a person whose life has ended. Who the fuck reads obituaries for fun?

Yes, we don't and can't care 100% about all people all the time, and we'll be more upset when our acquaintances and loved ones are hurt than when strangers are hurt. That doesn't mean that we don't consider strangers to be human, though, and it doesn't mean that we won't care about them enough to extend courtesy.

Not considering strangers to be human doesn't necessarily make you a sociopath (and far as I know, sociopathy isn't even an actual psychological diagnosis?), but I think it does go a bit beyond rudeness. It's kind of creepy.

Yeah, I knew that antisocial personality disorder was real. What I more meant by "sociopath isn't a real diagnosis" is that it's not the correct term in psychology. It also seems like it has a lot of cultural baggage, which is probably part of why it gets used in such incorrect/inappropriate ways.
