I've done that too.

One time I had character A/B together with B and C being pretty chilly towards each other. And then stuff changed so that B and C were friends by common duty. Then really good friends by common duty. Then "holy cow, probably understand each other more than anyone else" by common duty. Then the UST creeped in...

Character A doesn't exist anymore.

Not sure 'pure' is quite the right word. (starts off pure, then B betrays C out of duty which wrecks the relationship, but slowly C comes to see the importance of the greater good as well, even if she can't ever fully forgive B for the betrayal, creating a weird relationship in which they're business like on the surface, care for each other underneath, and then there's a third, even deeper level, and that one is the same as the top surface one. like with pie.)

But yeah. Totally retconned A out. Didn't help that A never really had that many connections and/or chemistry with any of the other characters in the story.
