Journey is also very clearly a metaphor on the stages of life people run through: Your very first steps after birth (tutorial/starting level), learning more of the basics and growing (first/bridge level), playful childhood/learning that you are not always sheltered (second/pink desert level), exuberance of youth (third/surfing level) and getting dumped into the scary world of being grown up and having to stand up for yourself (fourth/sunken city level), growing older and wiser, rising above things and being fully capable to use the things you learned to your advantage (temple/tower level), the aging catching up with you, losing your physical abilities as you age and grow weaker (snow level), struggling on the last few steps (the dorm at the end of the snow level), being released from your suffering and struggles through dying and being reborn (last level and ending -> new game).
