As much as I like Kochanski as a main cast member, I was also disappointed that they had a different actress play her.

I can usually plow through series 7 because I know Rimmer comes back. So if you're going to hate her, it should probably be for the second reason. (I don't actually know why they replaced the actress; was the first one unavailable, or did they not think she'd be right for the direction they wanted to take the character?)

From my memory of the rumors, Groghan wanted more money. (and since they'd already weathered CC's hiatus-causing jail stint, I expect they went "let's get someone cheaper") Also, CPG was in a band at the time iirc? So touring/recording might have been an issue for her getting the time off to shoot RD.

That said, this is, like, 20-year old memory, so I may be entirely incorrect.

I don't think the second version of Kochanski worked at all well. It's a shame, because I didn't dislike the actress, but the character seemed too different. For instance, I couldn't see original Kochanski insisting on them all playing characters in a Jane Austen hologram game.

Chloe Annett's Kochanski is from an alternate universe, and is thus a completely different character from the Grogan!Kochanski.

Annett!Kochanski was a dumb character to bring in, Rimmer replacement or otherwise. Grogan's was infinitely superior.

DUDE. I just started watching Red Dwarf like 3 weeks ago. AND IT IS MY NEW FAVORITE SHOW. So it is completely insane to me that this secret was just posted. O.O

(I mostly hate her for replacing Rimmer, but I do think I would have hated her less if she had been played by Grogan.)

I'm fond of the theory that Kochanski was effected by all the temporal nonsense the Boys got up to, like the Inquisitor.

(Specific variant - Annett-Kochanski, in the original timeline, had a run-in with the Inquisitor, and, since she was stuck on the Dwarf, felt she hadn't lived up to her potential, and got erased, replaced with Grogan-Kochanski....but then, the Boys erased the Inquisitor himself, and the original Koshanski was restored. Why the alternate universe was different is an openish question.)

Yeah, I hate her for replacing Rimmer because the writers didn't know how to do that without being GIRL about it. Which was obnoxious. And thus she wasn't funny.
