I doubt very much the books would've earned their place as classics if they'd had "kid-friendly" illustrations. The stories themselves aren't what make the books, it's definitely the illustrations.

If a parent or guardian feels that their child needs to be protected from scary pictures, there are plenty of other choices for them to read. Demanding that a product be sanitized for your use rather than exercising your freedom to read another book doesn't sit well with me.
