Your best thrift store/garage sale find!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I love garage sales (estate sales, thrift stores, anything like that!) but while I've found some neat things I can't really say I've stumbled across a gem. What's your best find?

My parents found an estate sale with a Monopoly table from the Franklin Mint. It retails for about $500 and they paid much less for it. The hotels are made of gold (or gold plated at least) and the houses are silver. They bought the set and it was never opened so whenever we play with it, we use other Monopoly money so we don't open it. It sits on its own table and super pretty.

A few weeks ago I found the entire series(five seasons) of Angel:tS on DVD at a library book sale for $25.

A set of prints by Hiroshige. They were selling them for $50 apiece so I grabbed all of them (because I recognized the art and knew what they were).

I then got them appraised and it turns out they're worth around $250-300 each. Needless to say, I am hanging onto them for the time being.

I once found two TWO TI-84 calculators at a flea market. They were $10 a piece. I can only assume that person was selling their kid's stuff or something.

From a yard sale in our neighborhood I got a whole big stack of MentalFloss magazines. Score!

Giant HDTV for $95. Not a flatscreen, so it's insanely heavy, but it was huge and an HDTV when not all TVs were HDTVs, and in fact when I went looking up reviews before making the purchase, I found out it was apparently the highest ranked HDTV in the year it was released, according to consumer reports, and sold for like $5000.

(Of course now I have an even larger flatscreen HDTV that I got for free because someone my brother knows was like "just get it out of my house, I need more room"...)

Also there was a warm fuzzy sweater from a fancypants designer store, in my size and favorite color, with price tag reading $80 still attached. I got it for $1.

We won't even get into the awesome/crazy shoes I've found.

I just really, really love thrift stores. :D

A numbered first edition of Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book, which appeared to have been printed on a hand-press (you could feel the imprints of the letters on the reverse of each page.) The binding was completely trashed, though.

I don't know about a "gem", but I've bought several items at garage sales that I keep and use to this day, some of which I bought like...a decade ago. Also I really, really like garage sales. :3

A LOT of stuff. Sole great dirt-cheap clothes. A giant purple snake plushie that was basically new.

Old Babylon 5 video's (which got me into the series), whole DVD boxes of series I used to love back in the day (like Roswell), even jewelry.

For a short while I had a work-for-the-dole position in a secondhand store (it may have been a Salvation Army store, I don't recall). I found a few interesting books on the cheap there, and a large scarf/small sarong (don't know which, but if it's the latter, it's definitely for very small people). At least one of the books I found I was not very happy about the ending of, even if it was a good read, but the scarf-whatever is a long-time favourite of mine.

A top-notch actually-equestrian riding crop, clearly seen field use but still in perfect condition, fifteen bucks.

A "sleeve ironer" from 1918 that's one of the most remarkable and versatile paddles I've ever seen, eighteen bucks.

A 1930s faux-ivory flat-backed hairbrush in perfect shape, twenty bucks.

I'm what you might call a specialist collector, I guess.
