Has anyone ever encountered someone who took fandom popularity a bit too seriously?

I had a very good friend who... we started kind of drifting apart when I noticed that all she ever talked about when we got together anymore was how many people were reccing her fic in places and all the nice comments and reviews she was getting and people who were emailing her about how much they loved her fic and she was the only person who ever wrote so-and-so accurately and blah blah blah.

We didn't talk for years due to a fall-out about something else, but a couple years ago I decided to try to make up with her, and we wound up hanging out and talking again... and at one point she was like "So you know, I could never really get away from you. Like in [fandom], whenever I see rec lists with my fic [X] on it, your fic [Y] was always on it too! No surprise, is it, that the two most recced fics in the fandom are yours and mine? *wink wink*"

And I was like "......... (sigh)"

Oh yeah. All she would do was write fics and draw art so that she could get all of the ass-pats. It's too bad that she was also kind of the fandom laughingstock as well.

I feel bad for experiencing morbid interest as to how that manifested. Like, was she laughed at behind her back?

Yes. It was on livejournal. I was like, "Okay, I don't want to know you." So I never spoke to them because they were crazy. You'll see it a bit in some tumblr people. I don't follow them though so I don't care.
