Well, I think it would work if there were several other fandoms. But then, I'm not a fandom serialist; my interests stick with me and expand rather than changing. So if I hit it off with someone over a major fandom, that interest is never going to completely go away. Of course, I'd get bored if we didn't have at least other fandoms in common if nothing else, even if we both stayed in it.
