I'm reminded of a conversation I once had with a friend who said that the problem with "A robot may not harm a human, or through inaction allow a human to come to harm" is that it would work great right up until assholes figured out they could just tell robots "I will kill myself if you don't make refilling my drink your top priority."

The reason some (not all) people use suicide threats as a way to manipulate and control others is that sometimes it works.

yeah, i agree that this kind of thing can quickly turn into emotional blackmail. it's difficult to tell the difference between a genuine person and a good manipulative person. and sometimes they're not even aware that what they're doing is manipulation.

YEP. I had a friend who would do things like this. She wasn't suicidal, but she would guilt trip me like crazy if I didn't gush over her latest fic offerings or drawings. I don't think she really realized what she was doing until I finally pushed her away.

Off-topic thoughts on robots

Reminds me of Freefall. The villain fakes a heart attack so the robots will prioritize getting him to the hospital, then once it's too late to turn back, he claims he's all better now. They insist he still needs treatment and prevent him from escaping.

The Gulf Between, by a different author, actually plays the First Law for horror. Every time the villain is about to die, the AI saves him, but since it doesn't understand pain, it keeps him alive in endless suffering despite his wish to die.

I have no idea how this relates to the original topic, save that manipulation can backfire pretty hard.
