A lot of them are, but not all.

Ehh, a lot of shounen/shojo characters are in their teens (target demographic and all), but I don't think they vastly outnumber "older" characters, either. Granted, "older" is more likely to mean mid-twenties tops, but post-puberty at any rate.

I do think they outnumber adult characters quite a bit. Especially since a ton of anime and manga tend to focus on highschool students. Manga has a lot more variety when it comes to having adults as the main character and in the supporting casts.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they actually do numerically outnumber them, especially in popular fare.

Yeah, it isn't just a shoujo or shounen thing. It seems to be a cultural thing. Japanese media seems to be fixated on highschool.

I just mean, it's not difficult to find manga that doesn't focus on high school or junior high school characters. A lot of my personal anime favorites don't even come close. Cowboy Bebop, for example (my absolute favorite anime, and Spike is, iirc, 27).

But yeah. Teens do outnumber adults, I'm sure.

I'd be quite comfortable with saying that they vastly outnumber adult characters. At least when it comes to anime. Manga has a lot more variety and so it wouldn't be hard to find stuff with adult protaganists. Anime on the other hand, would be a bit harder. Stuff like Cowboy Bebop is the exception, not the rule. I'm struggling to think of a recent anime that had an adult main character and mostly had a cast of adults. I'm drawing a blank.

I haven't seen much recent anime, but even something like Attack on Titan has half the cast as adults (while the other half are teens).

Other classic anime that come to mind with adult characters that I have seen:
Mushishi
Samurai Champloo
Baccanno!
Death Note (Light is a teen in the first half of the series, though all the other characters are adults, and Light becomes an adult by the second half)
Trigun (I think)
Ghost in the Shell (I think again, can't remember ages)

Come to think of it, I don't think I watch that much anime with kids (under eighteen or so). Not since I was that age myself, anyway.

None of those are what I would exactly call recent though. Tiger and Bunny is around three years iirc. Though Mushishi does have a currently airing anime and there is Ghost in the Shell:Arise.

And again, they're really the exception. Most recent anime focuses on kids and teenagers. Hell, just look at the upcoming summer season of anime and you will see what I mean.

But it isn't hard at all to find anime with adult characters. That's the point. Shows like "Cowboy Bebop" aren't an exception at all. Considering only a portion of anime gets popularized in the West in the first place, I'd say a relatively significant number of them feature adult protagonists.

And I agree again that most anime focuses on teenagers - but it doesn't overshadow anime that doesn't.

I was talking about anime in general though. And yes, when you look at anime coming out each and every season, stuff focusing on adult characters tend to be rare.

And if you're looking for more recent anime focusing on adults, it can be a bit harder to find stuff.

Really new anime? I plan to watch the DRAMAtical Murder anime when it is released this summer, and those lads are all in their twenties except for one late-teen

Not sure if I'd count Wolf's Rain. Kiba, Tsume, and Hife were pretty young looking. Then again they were wolves who were projecting illusions so who the hell knows.

Damn, you're right, I just checked the Wolf's Rain wiki (why does everything have a wiki now? whatever) and it listed Kiba as 17. Or at least, "appears" 17.

To be fair, though, Tsume is listed as 25. And I'd say they all act mature, except for that youngest one, what's his name. I mean, they are adults, for all intents and purposes, not "adolescents" - it's no coming of age story, anyway.

It did have a fair share of adult supporting characters so there's that. Plus, you know, the main characters were wolves.

I don't know the ages of the Hetalia characters, but they all look like adults to me. That may be a few years old now, I don't really keep up with the most recent stuff. /uncool
