Who is more overrated as a director - Quentin Tarantino or Joss Whedon?

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-06-07 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I put it to herpy and he says Tarantino, whereas I'm torn.

Joss because I hear more about him.

I'd say Joss. Tarantino is more highly rated but he's also a much better director.

Both, just in different genres.

Though I will say this for Tarantino, he has always been an asshole kind of openly in a "this is who I am take it or leave it" wheras Joss kind of goes along on this "I'm so swell and progressive" but then all this asshole stuff leaks out in various places.

But straight up movie quality, yeah I'd say pretty equally overrated just in different spheres.

Whedon. Tarantino's stuff generally doesn't overstay its welcome, and he lacks the proselytizing fans.

eta: oh hey actually Whedon's shows don't overstay either but for entirely different reasons ;D

among all generations? tarantino.

among the 18-30 population? whedon.

I love most of Joss Whedon's stuff, and don't care for Tarantino's stuff. And I think Tarantino is probably a bit more mainstream? idk. Whedon > Tarantino.

Whedon in purely fandom circles. Tarantino in the broader sphere.

I also feel like Tarantino's work is better than Whedon's, but Tarantino's stuff is just regarded that much higher (just look at the man's Oscars) which makes him more "over"-rated when it comes down to it.

This pretty much sums it up for me too.

And now I will use this opportunity to repeat that Tarantino needs to learn that he is not Hitchcock. He feels so out of place in every movie.

Whedon hasn't directed enough movies to say. He has two under his belt compared to Tarantino's eight. Tarantino has been able to develop a language in his directing. Like you can show a scene and people can tell that it is Tarantino because of the direction, lighting and dialog. Whedon isn't there yet.

So, in conclusion there is no conclusion.

Tarantino, but only because I don't think Whedon gets fawned over for mediocre directing half as much as he does mediocre writing.

I THINK Tarantino because generally people respond more to Joss for his writing? I mean, really he directed Serenity, The Avengers and Much Ado About Nothing. He's directed several things, but what's really take it or leave it is stuff he wrote or created.

As a creator, probably Joss (as much as I love his stuff). As a director, Tarantino for sure.

Whedon all the way. Tarantino makes some clever, beautiful shit and deserves high praise for most of his work IMO.

Also, the fast and oh-so-witty dialogues and oneliners on Whedon's stuff make me me cringe SO MUCH, and that's definitely a signature of his.

Tarantino but I just hate his movies so I am biased.

I'd say both just in different places, you're more likely to hear about Whedon in fandom spaces but Tarantio gets a lot of talk outside of that.

I personally don't mind either but I don't think they're the greatest directors, or writers, that ever graced the media. I just like some of their stuff.

Neither is overrated; they're both terrific. Furthermore, I think there's a deliberate confounding factor here, in that both guys are primarily known as writer/directors, so when you judge their work, are you actually judging them AS a director, or are you in fact judging the writing because you can't draw a distinction?

Specifically as a director in this case; me and derpy talked about this - there are films that both of them have written (but not directed) that might tip the balance in either case.

Whedon. Quentin Tarantino has made some brilliant, memorable films that people from all walks of life can appreciate, not just the rabid fans.

Tarantino all the way. Almost every single one of his movies is two movies smished together with a huge tonal shift. I'm fairly meh.

Tough one. I'd say Tarentino because he's got the longer, more mainstream career and reputation. On the other hand, nobody pretends Tarentino is both a genius AND the paragon of geek feminism, so...

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-06-07 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Whedon. Tarantino at least has an idea, while Whedon is a few movies away from Michael Bay territory.

Joss. Quentin is a cranky asshole who's living in the 70s, Whedon is a pseudo-intellectual faux-feminist hack writer who's built an empire out of being a geek sacred cow.

Re: Who is more overrated as a director - Quentin Tarantino or Joss Whedon?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Tarantino, because people don't really focus on Whedon's directing, they more gush about his writing. Tarantino writes as well of course, but since the question is about directing, not writing, it's Tarantino all the way.

Whedon and Tarantino both make popcorn movies. That's fine. I never expected Bram Stoker out of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I never expected Django Unchained to have the same gravitas as 12 Years A Slave.

It seems like going around calling things overrated is just an exercise in exhibitionist masturbation. "I like better stuff than you, LITTLE PEOPLE, observe!"

I like both but I find the worship of both annoying. But I'm not going to go around kicking sand in the face of all the little Fault In Our Stars fans because I think their book is sappy either.

Hahah you kind of already did, though, by referring to them as "little". I know tons of grown ass adults who loved that book, too. Is being patronizing better than calling something overrated? Tough call.
