OH MY GOD YES, ME TOO. especially when it's complete strangers. and shop assistants.

the other day I was shopping and the girl at the counter was talking to me and my sister, and she was like: "I could tell you two are sisters because you talk the same. you have a really husky voice."
and I was like: "uh thank you most people just ask me if I have a cold."
and then she was like: "I have a thing for husky voices."

I just... ???? how do I respond to that? was she flirting? or being friendly? or trying to sell me clothes? or was it a backhanded compliment?

I don't know!!!

If someone said that too me I'd be weirded out too! No one has ever hit on me or flirted with me irl (as far as I can tell) so that's why I'm so confused.

I honestly think that would confuse most people! It does sound like light flirtation ("I have a thing for [quality you possess]" is imo too immediately informal and personal a phrase to use otherwise if you're talking to a customer at your job, but she already sounds informal in general). But it's hard to guess the motivation behind it in this context... It's also possible she uses the phrase regularly and didn't think how it would sound to you, as customers.

I'd probably respond with something like "oh, well, thanks" or "oh, that's nice", and turn it back in some fashion to the customer-employee roles: ask any remaining questions if that's why I'm talking to her in the first place, or say if I need to continue shopping. If it's while she was ringing me up, I'd just wait for her to finish.
