Hm...that's actually probably exactly the type of thing they'd have a problem with -- blurring the lines between the TOS!characters and nu!characters and not labeling it as such in an author's note or something. I mean, it's one thing to use the original material as a source for fanon in fic about the derivative work, and putting stuff from the derivative work into the original material. Hell, it occasionally can be annoying even when it's done canonically -- like when comic writers put stuff from movie adaptations into the ongoing comics and stuff.
