Everyone has an opinion.
Is there something you enjoy, why not hang out with people who share that interest? That's basically what we're doing in fandom, sharing an interest in one thing. I don't really see how it's "disgusting" really. If I love Danny Phantom and Harry Potter I want to talk with other people who like Danny Phantom and Harry Potter and share opinions and ideas about it.
Just like people who like a particular show like to get together and talk about that show. I also like to get together with people who write and talk about writing. Other people like to get together with people who like a sport and discuss that sport.
I don't really see how discussing a story (whether it be a TV series or a book series or an anime or movie of graphic novel) is somehow bad or pathetic or disgusting.
In that case you must hate literature academics right?
