From what little I've seen of it I really like Loki's brand of humor. (If it's anything like his humor in Young Avengers, doubly so.) The only real reason I haven't read it is I worried if maybe that was a big too much Loki for me. I like him better in small doses when it comes to the films. (Never tried a comic centered around him.)

I've heard a lot about how shocking the ending to JIM was. At least people won't forget it...

The new comic Loki is neither old comic Loki nor movie Loki. He's more…Deadpool with magic powers, a personal agenda, and the occasional high stakes. Supremely likable so far. I do suggest giving AoA a shot. It's only four issues in, so not a lot to get caught up on yet. And Loki's explanation of magic at the beginning of the first issue is one of the best I've ever seen.

Fandom was in an uproar for a week, and nobody was sure what the primary emotion in the uproar was supposed to be. It was weird.
