Well, you don't necessarily hate the same things you did at 14 when you're older, but truly visceral loathing is usually forever, haha. The post-SOTL books and movies are pretty widely regarded as mediocre to bad, though (Hannibal Rising being the absolute worst of the worst), so you're not alone in hating those. I've seen all the movies and will be reading all the books because I'm compulsive that way, but yeah, the show has done wonders with its source material and surpassed any other adaptation for me. Can't wait for next season.

The novel Hannibal received decent reviews. I remember Stephen King saying it was one of the best horror novels he ever read.

... that was after he was hit by a car, right?

Nice.

Keep it classy.

It did, and some people really love all the books, but even those who do usually have trouble with Hannibal's wacky ending. Bryan Fuller plans to resolve it in another season afterward. And I do love Uncle Steve, but he says that about a lot of books, lol. I remember reading a really funny evisceration of The Ruins where the guy just couldn't believe they read the same book.

I kind of liked Hannibal Rising. Gong Li was in it and I'd watch her in a Cheerios commercial.

She really is highly watchable, but my favorite part was when the French detective said "gill-o-tine." :D

I have watched a lot of shit for Gong Li but Hannibal Rising was pretty much the worst.

So Hannibal is not similar to the old movies and books, which you tried to enjoy at age 14but couldn't? The red text in the middle is a bit hard to read.

I love imagining you getting butthurt whenever they praise Harris now.

i just want to hug you and say "my people!!" :)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, no big loss. But it does suck to hate things that you used to like.

I'm just a little sad that you didn't like Silence of the Lambs, because I read it and thought it was fantastic and wish everyone could enjoy it. But, I'm pretty sure I would have hated it when I was 14.

I read those books when I was 13...loved them and I still do. >_>

At least you gave it a try by reading past the first book. I stopped with just the movie. I liked it okay because of the general plot, but could never do anything with the books or other movies because I was so disgusted by the cannibal aspect. If he'd just been a regular serial killer I might have given it a shot. But cannibalism was just too icky for my gore-averse self.

oh man, I agree with you, OP!

and I can definitely see why this is a secret.

I much prefer the TV show, to be honest, and apparently that makes me a bad fan.

there's a lot of book fans who would not be happy if you expressed your dislike for the books. personally, I enjoyed SoTL (the book) mainly because of Clarice Starling. not so much the other books and films.

idk, but I just don't think Thomas Harris's writing is as amazing as people say. I mean, SoTL was good, but it's not a masterpiece.
