"Most of the time" is still stupid.

Something being unpopular doesn't mean it's just too complex and fabulous of a story for those stupid plebeians to comprehend. A lot of the time, unpopular things are unpopular because they just aren't that good.

I agree that something being popular doesn't equate it with being good, but frankly, I'd confidently assert there's a higher chance of something popular being at least positively enjoyable than something you randomly pulled out of the discount bin, where there are certainly gems, but surrounded by a lot of crap.

And that says nothing about how "good" is subjective.

Yes, but things can be good, bad AND average. An average show isn't bad. Using anime as an example: SAO is bad, Free is average, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is good.
