I also like the original FMA more than Brotherhood.

While heretical amongst manga stans, that point of view is shared by just about everyone I've ever met (including myself) who hasn't read the manga. This leads me to wonder if, as a standalone work of art, the original wasn't objectively better.

I was briefly in the FMA fandom while the original anime was still airing, and I do remember the manga stans bemoaning the atrocities the anime was committing. I can't say I've been in the fandom since Brotherhood came out so I don't know the current opinions.

But, I don't know. I just loved how the homunculi were portrayed in the anime (especially Lust), I loved the themes of attaining humanity, and I loved how the series wrapped up and ended at around 50 episodes. I tried the manga, and it just didn't have the same charm to me (though it certainly had some amazing points, too).

I saw the first anime before reading the manga or watching Brotherhood, and I still prefer the Brotherhood storyline. But I absolutely agree with you that the homunculi were way more interesting in the 2003 version, and I consider them the best part of that canon.

Me too. I watched the first anime and then read the manga as I was watching Brotherhood and yet I still prefer Brotherhood. And agreed on the homunculi bit for the most part.

The thing I loved the manga for was its worldbuilding, which was the most consistent and believable I'd ever seen in an action manga (typically a genre that runs on Rule of Cool.) I wasn't really that into the characters, and the plot dragged on way too long. The first anime kept the worldbuilding consistent when it stayed with the manga, but relied heavily on Rule of Cool when diverging from it, so it felt like a mess to me on that grounds. Pretty much everything else about it seemed better, though.
