And how many people were turned off Shakespeare in school and never seen a play of his since? Famous =/= popular

I doubt most people read Shakeaspere nowadays. Classics are famous, but no one reads them.

No-one is a stretch.

I recently went to the cinema for one of those "broadcast theatre" things (King Lear), and the audience was really mixed.

Sure, it's not popular the way, say, One Direction is, but it still draws a crowd.
