The funny thing is most of the Coen brothers films are genre films themselves, it's just genres other than science fiction / fantasy. Incredibly well done genre films, obviously, but a lot of their work is crime thriller or detective, or comedic takes on those genres. Blood Simple is noir, Miller's Crossing is a gangster flick, Big Lebowski is an adaptation of noir, Raising Arizona is a comedic take on a crime movie, Intolerable Cruelty is screwball (a lot of their movies are influenced by Preston Sturgess and screwball), True Grit's a Western. Genius takes on all those genres obviously but the Coen brothers are very often working in genres and existing traditions.

My point, I guess, is that even within genre, peoples' tastes can be really limited. Crap, even in science fiction and esp fantasy they can be really limited. Tunnel vision, you know?

are they? i would definitely call most of them noir or thrillers, but i didn't realize that was genre as well. oh well, shows what i know.

but i totally agree with your point about tunnel vision (i guess not seeing coen films were genre kinda proved it?).
it's funny how for a lot of people fantasy is just tolkien-esque epics with orcs, elves and dwarves and good vs evil, and sci-fi is just spaceships and aliens (which i hate, but i still manage to love sci-fi).

Well, it's tricky. I wouldn't say 'thriller' in general is a genre, but crime thriller certainly is - I'm thinking of the stuff written by people like Jim Thompson, Donald Westlake, and Elmore Leonard. That's certainly a genre in the same way that mystery or Western or science fiction is a genre. And I think a lot of the Coen brothers' stuff (esp their early stuff) comes out of that. But not knowing that is a totally different thing from the kind of tunnel vision I'm talking about. I mean, you're aware that fiction can do those things, just not that it was classified as a genre.

You're totally spot on about the science fiction and fantasy though, people just aren't aware that fantasy fiction can do things outside of Tolkienesque epic and maybe urban fantasy. Often they aren't that interested in it doing things like that. It's honestly pretty frustrating sometimes.
