My point, I guess, is that even within genre, peoples' tastes can be really limited. Crap, even in science fiction and esp fantasy they can be really limited. Tunnel vision, you know?

but i totally agree with your point about tunnel vision (i guess not seeing coen films were genre kinda proved it?).
it's funny how for a lot of people fantasy is just tolkien-esque epics with orcs, elves and dwarves and good vs evil, and sci-fi is just spaceships and aliens (which i hate, but i still manage to love sci-fi).

You're totally spot on about the science fiction and fantasy though, people just aren't aware that fantasy fiction can do things outside of Tolkienesque epic and maybe urban fantasy. Often they aren't that interested in it doing things like that. It's honestly pretty frustrating sometimes.
