Oh, I definitely don't believe it's some sort of feminist statement if it's Black Sails. That was very clearly allllll for teh menz.

Well here's my question: If we accept that the only ideology of feminism is that men and women are equal, then WHY must "a feminist show" and "A show made for a male audience" be two mutually exclusive ideas?

I'm bringing this up fully aware that this makes me a misogynist and a troll in most peoples eyes, but surly a show can be made for one audience, and if it's good, have a message and a meaning to all? "Made for men" does not inherently imply "cancerous to women" Just like "Made for women" should not mean "Men will not like this" or "Made for children" does not means "If you're grown up, this is gonna suck"

I have not seen this show, so I can't say for certain, but let me ask you this: Does it have any awesome female characters in it?

If you watched it, you'd get it. The sex scenes in the show clearly objectify the actors involved. It's just something you understand when you watch it.

I don't agree with anon's blanket assumption that lesbian characters on a show made by guys guarantees objectification, but I get what s/he's driving at because sometimes it IS solely about titillation.

But your comparisons are kind of off? I mean look. You posit a "made for men" show as being not necessarily "cancerous to women" (emphasis mine) but when you posit a "made for women" show, you don't mention it being "cancerous" to men, only unappealing. See what you did there? It's because a "made for men" show typically mean women in demeaning, objectified roles, while a "made for women" show typically means "issues that supposedly do not interest men". You're comparing "cancerous" to "uninteresting" as if they're equivalent. And THAT'S why the idea of a show for men and a feminist show end up being mutually exclusive, because two different standards of measure are being used depending on what the market audience for the show is.

As for Black Sails, I haven't seen much of it myself. What I did see where two sex scenes in which a male character with a story arc is pleasured by a group of women who are mostly just background eye candy. The second sex scene is between two women and if you saw it, you might be able to figure out why people are critical of it. There's lesbian porn for actual lesbians. And there's lesbian porn for straight dudes who like lesbian porn. They look... quite different.

Also? "Has at least one awesome female character in it" doesn't necessarily mean it's a feminist show, or that it's a show that doesn't have issues.
