I grew up during that period so I played a lot of those games when they were new or semi-new. I didn't like them then and I don't like them now.

The problem with Spiderweb Software games is that they're grossly unbalanced. I mean, at least they didn't do realtime-with-pause, but avoiding THAT awful system is basic competency. Geneforge especially is nigh-unplayable. I didn't get more than a quarter into Avernum, either.

If they have one thing going for them though, they're not geek sacred cows, kind of falling by the wayside compared to bigger names like Planescape.

I'll grant you grossly unbalanced. Boy will I grant you grossly unbalanced. (Though I do think Geneforge deserves a little credit for being so gloriously odd. It's like Shin Megami Tensei without religion, which shouldn't even be possible, and yet somehow it exists.)
