Less that I believe in monoliths and more that I don't believe in children who simply don't want to be seen as "choosing sides." There are true Independents out there. Fewer than would like be admitted, though. Most independents rank pretty notably on either the liberal or conservative side - they just don't want to be called that.

Children, huh? I personally would have gone with the word individuals in that sentence, but if you want to mimic their mannerisms that's your prerogative.
