Re: Stuff you love, but can't really recommend to other people
(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Stuff you love, but can't really recommend to other people
He rapes a gypsy girl who commits suicide, and haunts his dreams in a way that may or may not be magic, until it drives him crazy, and he decides that he wont rape people anymore. Then he meets Odette, who tells him of the curse, and she's kind of like his "pure" love that he'll marry, and he'll stop raping people.
It's really disturbing, and in a way, kind of fascinating? Because in the book, he doesn't even realize he's raping people, but just assumes it's his privilege as the prince, and even his church leader is like "nah she was just a gypsy, you did good son, she was just a sinner". It's like, the gypsy girl was the first time he realized that "hey, maybe having sex with people against their will is bad!"

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)TBF the whole thing with the church leader is shown in a fairly bad/unsympathetic light - just in a way that also showed that the character didn't think that. At least, that's how I always read it.
I think that whole thing may have been a [very] clumsy attempt to show the prince waking up to "Hey, maybe things aren't so great." But...yeah, it was done very, very badly and that makes it something I'd not recommend as well.
Which is a shame since it really fleshes out Odile into an awesome, sympathetic character from what she was in the original story.
