Re: Have you tried/are you vegetarian/vegan?

If it is something you are actually interested in I'd get a second opinion. Obviously I don't know what your eating issues are, but it's perfectly capable to find iron and all other nutritional sources other places than meat. It just might take a bit of effort and nutritional educating on your part.

It is, but I can wait until my other eating issues are dealt with. She explained to me her thought process as to why, and I completely understand, so now I try to eat organically as best as I can until those issues are dealt with.

To absorb iron from vegies one needs to have Vit C with it and even than... Also meat is not only an iron source. Anyway, it's great that you have a doctor you trust.

Yeah, this. I'm not trying to preach or be militant vegetarian here, but I'd probably go for a second opinion if it's something you want to do. There are a lot of non-meat sources that have iron in. Spinach comes to mind.

But I guess it depends on why you want to be vegetarian. Spiritual reasons? Animal/environmental? Health? You could always try "Meatless Mondays" or something as a start.

No. No no no. Not spinach. Someone basically put the comma at the wrong place, that's why everyone (still) thinks spinach has so much iron. It's just wrong. It still has a little, but not even remotely as much as people believe. It also has a substance that inhibits iron absorption. Try peas, lentils and other legumes. They have much more.

da

Iron from non-meat sources (non-heme iron) and supplements is not absorbed by the body as well as iron from meat sources (heme iron). It's not an opinion, this is biological fact and any doctor will tell someone with anemia issues that they need to eat red meat.
