Children of Men and Saving Private Ryan. The former was decent but utterly ruined by the last ten minutes or so, and only the first ten minutes of the latter were any good at all.

is saving private ryan really that bad? i wanted to watch it because it has adam goldberg in it (hey, it's as good a reason as any) but i'm not a movie person and i need something that'll keep me interested from start to end.

It's not. It's a decent film, one of the first Hollywood films to really have the balls to show just how violent, dirty and gory any given war got (and have the special effects to back it up) and overall you really get attached to the characters which is why losing them hurts.

oh man, i'm gonna have to watch adam goldberg die again? oh god this is gonna hurt. and bryan cranston is in it, too!

anyway, i think i'll watch it. violent and dirty is good; trumps boring any day.

The "special effects to back it up" being the key word there, since The Big Red One (among others) were much darker and grittier than Saving Private Ryan ever was (aside from the first ten minutes, of course). And the ending was pure ham and cheese.

A lot of people absolutely adore it, so don't take my word for it. It is one of those movies you're "supposed" to like (because WWII, also sad) but after the D-Day scene it just degenerated into trite cliches for me.

I watched CoM with my parents when it came out. And all we came away from it with was... we're horrible people because we spent most of the movie making bad word associations/laughing at inappropriate times. >.>;;

Lol inorite. It was supposed to be inspiring and moving and it just came across as saptastically over the top.

What I think of when I remember Children of Men is the scene with the old man in front of the house in the woods and how it gutted me. But the rest probably wasn't that good.
