Re: Misconceptions your fandoms have
Israelis are not monolithic, obviously, but according to canon, she's a Sabra, an Israeli born and raised in Israel by Sabra parents (this is important: immigrant Israelis act differently and even if their kids are born in Israel, those kids are raised slightly differently). She should carry many, if not all of what I'd call "artifacts of Israeli culture." Their culture is *nothing* like American. Canon!Ziva comes across as American, even when the writers have her supposedly acting like an Israeli.
If you want to read Israeli characters, including Ziva, written by an Israeli: Hagar's works are excellent, and she uses a lot of canon elements.
I ditched canon. You can click on my username and the first post on my journal has my fic list. The notes post attached to "Complexity" involves a reasonably thorough exploration of Israelis as a people: history, attitudes, cultural influences. I say "reasonably thorough" because it's only about 18K words. If I wanted to be completely thorough, I'd honestly need 300K or more to do Israelis justice (and btw, that notes post is both fair and critical. I learned in Israel to just say it like it is. And that is a big thing missing from canon!Ziva).

Mostly, they're misrepresented. So I write stories that fix one tiny, insignificant bit of that misrepresentation.
I'm pretentious? Ani mitzta'eret—I apologize.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)No, that's not pretentious.
But smugly going on about it like that sure as fuck is.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 07:13 am (UTC)(link)There's nothing pretentious about wanting to see your culture accurately represented.
Re: Misconceptions your fandoms have
I dunno that that anon is a jerk. I think they *might* not be sure about the definition of "pretentious"? If I didn't know jack about Israel and Israelis, and yet claimed to know more than everyone else, then I'd be pretentious.
Know a fair bit, but I don't know enough yet. I'm still learning... as my awful Hebrew will attest.
Re: Misconceptions your fandoms have
(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)I admit, I've only seen a couple of NCIS eps with Ziva in them but wasn't she meant to be a spy/assassin from a family of spies and assassins? Her career field and early family life would certainly affect her communication style.
...as for the other anon. I think they have a decent grasp of what the word "pretentious" means. It's not the difference between knowing nothing (but pretending you do) and knowing something. According to google it's "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed," or being pompous. I think they were trying to communicate that they don't like your tone. (And who knows? Maybe they're a Sabra themselves. Or live in Israel. Or whatever.)
