Um...things like disasters [natural or otherwise] are the biggest one, but other general tragedies as well.

oh so. . . people will role-play the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, or the Mexico City earthquake of 1985, or use them as a setting for fic-- things like that?

It's the fic and it's...not usually that direct. There are a few that are, but the majority are like "X comforts [confronts or whatever] Y after Z event". Oddly enough, I haven't seen much of it in the roleplay so if it's happening there it's private enough it's not upsetting anyone.

Basically, they just write fic about an event way Too Soon after it happens and that upsets people. Then they don't understand why people are upset and it just goes downhill from there.

So, for example, say a disaster were to happen next week. They'd be writting about it before the week was over, or in the next few months following it. So, well before it stops being a sensitive topic.

ok! thanks for explaining! It does seem like a general warning / restriction in fic communities would be a good idea!

Yeah, it's just that there is a general tendency of people *outside* the fandom to tell this specific fandom this as a whole - and yeah. The people complaining *do* have a point that it's annoying as fuck since they [the people doing the telling aren't in the fandom] telling people things like that in a fandom they aren't in...but at the same time it's also something that does need to be said, and this fandom tends to not react to crap until after it's been done.
