how do you mean? the fic is good, I'm not disputing that (would never dispute it - it is the best fic in the fandom, that's not debatable). I just wish the one person would let it stand on its own merits instead of incessant pimping (it also feels like they feel like the fic wouldn't stand on its own and that it NEEDS them and is only popular because of them, not because of the writing)

Are you OP? I was responding to your "Maybe I'm just bitter?" comment at the bottom of your secret. Because yes, you sound a bit bitter.

Case in point: "it is hard enough trying to get people to see your work without having to compete with someone who treats it like a job."

That's why I thought the annoyance factor of the pimpage was a side issue, while the main issue is that it makes you angry that the big fic is the only one that people tend to see.

It's more like... Like I did a lot of soul-searching because I felt like I was being an absolute jerk by being annoyed by the narrator's behavior, when they are mostly harmless I suppose. So I think that part of my annoyance is that I'm worried it artificially puts more eyes on the fic than would come across it 'naturally,' which hurts my fic's chances, but that's honestly just part of it. I just find it obnoxious and worry it drives as many people away as it converts. The fic is good on its own, it doesn't need to be crammed down everyone who mentions the fandom on Tumblr's throats, if that makes any sense.

(Different nonnie)

On the writers' forums I used to hang out on, that podfic reader's behaviour would be called "BSP" (Blatant Self-Promotion) and sooner or later someone would tell them to shut up for the love of God. OP, you *might* be bitter, but constant self-pimping by readers or writers is tiresome and obnoxious as hell (especially in a small fandom) and it's very likely many people feel as you do about it.

(Some of the forums I was on would warn or even ban people who behaved like that, if they didn't seem to be adding anything else to the community.)

I hope some people read you fic, and also that this person calms the fuck down.

Oh God, this. We have a BSPer in my small fandom, and it is blatant to the point of hilarity. It's amazing how she manages to squeeze self-recs or otherwise promote herself into every other thing she posts.

Mind you, in her case she got so frantic for attention that she started saying that other authors were overrated. Most of the old-timers got pissed off, discussed it on f-lock, and took a hike. Now what's left are mostly newbies who either don't notice her self-promotion or don't mind it.

that was me, too.
