I think it's the inverse -- Mary Sues started out embodying a fairly broad range of Sueness, but then became more specialized as different sorts of Sues found different niches and fandoms.

I think I once considered a whole story about how Sues in Tolkien are the spawn of a particular Maia who wanted everyone to pay attention to her and worship and fawn all over her.

Even Melkor finds her (and her spawn) unbearable.
