I have a friend who was married to a man and claims she always thought she was straight until she fell in love with a woman. But she was raised in a conservative household in a conservative town, so I've wondered if she just didn't want to entertain the possibility until she fell deeply in love. Or she's bi and just avoids using that term for whatever reason. As you said, it's totally up to her how she identifies herself to others.
