Thanks for the input! I would be interested to know what you have to say about it, no one I've talked to has used it before, so any information would be great.

Well, ancestry.com is a bit expensive, though they are probably doing specials. There are other sites, but they tend to strike me as a bit dodgy - DEFINITELY stay away from archive.com. FamilySearch is a bit easier because it's free, and you could always get some information ahead of time. There's census records, birth records, the works - start with your grandparents and go from there.

Unfortunately this place is really the only thing remotely close to LJ or Tumblr that I go to, and I don't have an account here. Closest thing like that I have is Steam, so...

Anyways, I guess the biggest question is how long a basic subscription last for as a gift, if it last for a month or just a week, stuff like that.
