I kind of agree... fandom was definitely more fun when I was in that stage, since I had no sense of shame.

I definitely had more fun in fandom when I was a weeb. Granted, I was also a teenager and had more time for it so.

I was thinking along these lines recently. It was some live acting TV too along with anime for me though. I had whole folders of images of my fave character, I was very thorough in my search for fanart and fic, I was in one fandom for longer than a month. Now I'm kinda between a few fandoms, and I don't feel particularly obsessed. *sigh*

Oh god you sound like me. I had folders and folders of my favorite characters and shit. It was always fun trying to find those really hard to find Japanese fanart sites and bookmarking them and...gah. In someways I miss those days. But, despite what my username says, I don't even watch much anime anymore. Nothing truly grabs my interest anymore unless it just sounds different.

Oh yes, those hard to find (and navigate) Japanese sites! Me neither. It's like they said, that in Japan otaku are mostly teens who don't watch anime when they grow older. I couldn't believe it at the time. Now, the last time I watched anime, it was a Slayers rewatch a few months ago. I've become quite picky about the tv. Your icon is strangely appropriate to the topic.

A lot of things are more fun when you're younger, unfortunately. But there are lots of nifty things you can do when you grow up as well, like... drink the pain away!

I had so much fun in my teen weabboo stage, I won't deny it. Especially when you had other weeb friends to squee with.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's because you were younger. That's really all it is. Fandom hasn't objectively changed all that much.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Aww shit. Now my past is coming back to haunt me again, OP... But I agree on it in that weaboo stage is one of the most fun fandom moment I've ever had. I've had genuine interaction back then (as opposed to me now just lurking in tumblr and looking at pretty gifs), and actually the drama was fun. Stanning the hell out of your "yaoi slash" without all the laden SJW bullshits attached on its back nowadays was rad.

Pfft.. "stage"? I think by now, it's a permanent part of my life. I've been a "weeaboo" since back when people called it being an "otaku", and we got our anime on Nth-generation VHS tapes, and if we wanted to subtitle, you needed a sweet setup including a genlock (I still have mine). None of this digital crap.

Kids these days don't know how good they have it. *shakes cane*

Seriously, though, I may get a little embarrassed when people who don't get it ask, but when I find someone else who's still in their "anime squee" stage, it's a blast! :)

I agree. When I went to my first convention, all I cared about was how fun it was and how everyone there had so much energy (and how much my feet hurt from all the running around...). When I revisited the same con several years later, I kept thinking that everything was so embarrassing and uncomfortable. Self-awareness sucks.
