Whether it's your race, gender, country of origin, job, or other specific experiences... do you ever lie to make some kind of point? Or even not to make a point at all, but just to introduce another viewpoint, or articulate something in your head? Are you trolling, or relatively serious in what you say? Do you even realize you are doing it?

I haven't, but when I plan out replies or posts that I never actually post for various reasons, I would most likely change my gender IF what I was asking/saying wouldn't really sound right/appropriate coming from a man's mouth (of course I'd only do this also if needing to know gender were important to the post).

I've done the same thing, but with the genders reversed. High five!

I omit things but I've never outright lied.

I'd like to lie in theory, but I never can. I always tell the truth about myself.

I once lied about my race because it was an SJW discussion and people were outright saying they wouldn't take an opinion seriously if it came from a white person.

Otherwise, no. I've never said what my job is because I'm sure plenty of people would harass me over it (especially given the type conversations going on in another thread right now) but I've never lied and said it was anything else either.

If I'm talking about something that might reveal who I am to people who know me I'll change unimportant details. I'll neglect to correct spelling, or I'll change my dialect, or I'll lie about my partner, but only if it won't influence the discussion.

Nah, don't see the point. If I don't feel like commenting on a topic or mentioning a specific thing I just don't. I'm not a very good liar, and lying makes me feel guilty anyway.

Naw, but I do on occasion in real life. Mention that you're a PhD student to someone and all they want to hear about is your research (which I'm tired of talking about). Tell someone that you work "in IT" and their eyes glaze over and they drop the subject immediately.

I sometimes exaggerate my opinions slightly in hopes of getting a response but I don't lie and I haven't lied about anything personal about myself.

Sometimes I change a few facts about my story to avoid people I know from IRL recognising me here. But never to start a discussion - considering how disconnected and disingenuous internet conversations/connections can already be, I don't see any point in adding to that.

Sadly, it's all true ;)

Though I think I'm sometimes deliberately vague. And I have been known to go anon for really personal stuff.
