This may be a bit tainted in bias, so you have been warned.

Chrom and the Female Avatar, along with Male Avatar and Lucina are my prime examples.

Yes, if you do these pairings, the dynamics of the game may feel different and some scenes will change. But it's just one's own emotions that make the impression stronger/more dramatic/etc. on them, not actually the game acknowledging you married Chrom/Lucina throughout the majority of the plot and supporting you wholeheartedly.

Let me say this here that feelings of involvement and attachment are normal, especially for a game where the player stand-in can marry the guy/girl they like in this game. But I think with some people in this fandom (I will blame immaturity in the most basic sense of the word), they can't fathom the possibility where someone doesn't share their feelings, and believe their emotional responses are canonical facts.

EDIT: I forgot the inverse of why I hate the word. In a twist of horrific fate it's used against Sumia, who complain about her being the "canon" love interest to Chrom.

Huh. I mean, I see why people do it, but that's bizarre. It's so clear to me, when I played the game, that the game was NOT adjusting for couples and those reactions. I thought it was painfully obvious at some points how scenes weren't written with certain pairings in mind--especially Chrom/MU, given the amount of screentime Chrom has.

That said, I can see being annoyed by "canon" love interests--you sort of feel like the devs are telling you 'do this' and everything else is less valid for it. Maybe it's just because I'm an ME fan, and it in Mass Effect, Liara is the person it's clear the game wants you to be with.

Yeah, it's a bit... strange. But I think people just get really caught up in it all. "Canon" ended up both as the superiority badge or a point of derision... In the end it's kinda petty, a smidge insensitive, a breeding ground for fights, you know.

Hm, I've never played Mass Effect. I didn't know it had "leanings" for certain romances, that's interesting.

I'm in the older FE fandom, and yeah I feel this way too. All the pairs with endings are possible-canon to me, and while some games push one pairing above another with extra material or cutscenes, like Ike/Soren, Eliwood/Ninian, that kind of thing, the ones with multiple options are still as valid. I'm so sick of people going on about how their one Chrom or Lucina ship (and it's always them) is the "real canon" the game intended when it's so open-ended, way more than any of the other games.

Yeah, it's very open-ended! I wish people would embrace/appreciate that and try the variety. I guarantee for the downs that some supports have, there are definitely hidden treasures in there.

Also, I'm gonna admit that learning how gameplay-wise those two pairings are not that great makes the inner demon in me smile.
