But for the record, I disagree with you. Cat would have been happy to kill Lannisters alive. She just lost the ability to discern friend from foe in a meaningful way.

People say ridiculous shit about Catelyn Stark, though. People go around blaming the entire civil war on her. It's absurd.

I really don't think Catelyn Stark (a character whose most defining trait is her intense, almost frightening love of her children) wanted them to die so she could be a bitch. That doesn't seem likely to me. It seems quite unlikely.

I would just like to say that fauxkaren isn't the only person in the world to think that Catelyn isn't the worst person in the series. I have no idea why she gets so much hate. Catelyn was also living her hell before she was killed - her family torn apart and her husband executed - so you can't argue she wasn't punished for taking Tyrion hostage.

I've never really gotten it either. Like, maybe if she were a character in another series I could see why she gets so much hate but she's actually a pretty decent person by Game of Thrones standards and is far, far from being the worst of the bunch

I think some of it is Cersei stans? Cersei and Catelyn tend to get compared a lot, probably more than they should, and you get the sense that some people feel they're somehow helping one's case by attacking the other.

I always thought of them as Jon stans. They always bring up how badly she treated Jon as proof that's she's such a horrible person. Yeah, she didn't treat Jon all that well but it was nowhere as bad as people make it out to be.

this. if she was on just about any other show, her unreasonable hatred and poor treatment of jon would make her a lot more unsympathetic to me but since this is GoT it's just like "well, that's shitty but it's still way less shitty than the things a lot of other characters do". hell, a lot of other characters probably would have just plotted his murder if they were in her shoes so she did pretty okay. I feel like evaluating the "goodness" of GoT characters is a lot different than doing the same for characters of most other shows. you just have to make allowances for some shit, otherwise you'll hate everyone.

I don't even know what this secret is really getting at.

Killing Cersei and Tywin Lannister? Yes, Catelyn would have been all for that when she was alive.

But like... just generally going around killing indiscriminately like Lady Stoneheart is doing? I don't see Catelyn doing that while she was alive at all.

And also, I'm pretty sure she'd vow never to kill again if it meant she could have her children alive and well.

...except for the part where Catelyn's family was, like, her entire raison d'etre? The series draws what I thought were some fairly clear parallels between her and Cersei wrt the way they thought about/acted because of their kids. I'm pretty sure that had Catelyn had the choice, she would not have elected to get herself and her oldest son (who iirc she believed to be one of only two of her five original kids still living) offed so she could have an(other) excuse to go after the Lannisters, after whom she was already going.
