Not really. It's not like it wasn't violent. It's just that during Saddam's rule one of the groups had enough power to keep the others down consistently, and now they have pretty equal levels of power.

Exactly, stability through strength. Plus Saddam was mostly secular, so all the Islam fundamentalism was kept to a minimum. The guy had kicked AQ out of the country for being a threat to stability and prosperity, so things were pretty chill. Even with the sanctions it still had a pretty good public healthcare system, better than average child literacy rates, and a decent level of prosperity.

Things were pretty chill except for all the things that Saddam himself was doing, is my point. Violent attacks on the Kurds, repression against the Sh'ia, general dictatorial tactics and frequent purges, waged war against Iran and Kuwait. He was not a great guy!

None of that justified or should serve to justify the invasion of Iraq, of course, but neither should we see his reign as rosier than it was. The problems that we're seeing here existed under Saddam, they were just repressed because, you know, it was a dictatorship. They pre-date Saddam. They go back to colonial rule and before.
