I swear my mom wants me to be miserable. She always knows exactly what to do to bring me down when I'm happy and I hate her for it. I was in such a great mood up until a couple minutes ago when I talked to her and now I feel like my weekend is ruined because of her. I hate it. :(

I tried just now (and have tried every time it's happened in the past) and her response was (and always is) that something really urgent suddenly came up and she has to go. Amazing how that always happens.

Well, that sucks, nonny. My Mum also has the ability to ruin my mood, but I think in her case it's more ignorance than malice, since it did help telling her.

Have you tried turning that tactic on her? Once she starts in with the criticism, announce that something important just came up and rush out the door or hang up the phone. It probably won't get through to her, but it might spare you some heartache.

Yep, been there. Do you think she even realizes it, or maybe she's doing it subconsciously? Either way it's not cool and you should speak with her about it. (Though if she's anything like my mother she'll just deny it and get angry at you for accusing her of anything.)

I'm not sure actually. Sometimes I feel like it almost has to be intentional because it's just so perfectly passive-aggressive but then other times I think it's got to be subconscious because she's so self-absorbed that I can't imagine she puts much thought into how what she says might affect someone else. But yes, deny it and get angry at me is pretty much what she does (and I get "this isn't about you!" a lot, because of course it's about her, everything is always about her) if she'll say anything at all, but a lot of the time there's some urgent situation that she must take care of right! now! that has miraculously come up so she can't talk to me anymore.

Maybe it IS intentional some of the time, and the rest of the time it just comes naturally. Does she do the 'urgent situation' thing when you bring up her attitude towards you, or just in general? Either way I guess there isn't much you can do about it if she refuses to listen or talk it out, so it's unfortunate you have to deal with it. Sorry.
