i'm curious about how iran will play this, if they'll really intervene. they seemed so wishy-washy during the syrian crisis.

Nah, Iran only figured because W. and Ahmadinejad got into it over the "axis of evil" crap (W. claimed Iran was evil for not buying into the Rumsfeldian vision of the Middle East, Ahmadinejad decided to be a dick back in return), they are both out of office now and Iran is pretty much okay with things now. Well, except for Israel still carrying out terrorist acts within Iran's borders and on Iran's citizens, but Obama is a lot less cool with Israel doing that than Bush was, so even that has eased off. Turns out that not acting needlessly antagonistic to Iran makes it a lot less likely to be antagonistic back, who knew?

you seem to be focusing on a us perspective? personally, i'm not.

iran can't afford to become more isolated in the region and it's important to them to keep a shiite friendly neighborhood. which is why i thought the response to the syrian crisis was a bit wishy-washy and while i know tehran isn't alarmed yet, i'm curious how they'll handle the ISIS rise if it holds.

They have reason to get involved beyond pissing the US off, you know. Iran would still be interested in Middle East politics if George W Bush was never elected. They do live there. They're interested in this for the same reason they've been interested in everything else - because it follows their interests. It just so happens that their interest this time is on the same side as the US in this case.

To be more specific, in addition to generally being interested in nations on their borders and in their region like another nation would be, they're interested in this case because they're predominantly Shi'ite; they'd like to preserve a relatively friendly Shi'a government rather than a government of extremist Sunnis who would be violently opposed to them, and they want to help defend their co-religionists in the area. In other words, they want to support the Shi'ites for basically the same reasons they did before. It would probably be going a little too far to describe Shi'ites in the region as straight-up Iranian proxies but there are strong links between them and there have been for a while now.
