I'm so fucking annoyed at my mother.

I invited her over for tea yesterday as she always complains about how she never gets to see my flat or whatever. So she comes over and the first thing she does is inspecting the entire place, which isn't a problem as I spent the day cleaning. It does become a problem however when lifts my fucking couch to check if I'd cleaned under there (which granted I hadn't). Now this, this makes me really annoyed, because it's one thing for her to check under my bed when I lived at home, it's another thing entirely for her to do it in MY own flat, but whatever, I'll clean under there when she leaves, let's just have a cup of tea now, OK? My mother however keeps going on and on about how messy I am and wondering about where she failed as a parent. And sure, I know I'm not the cleanest person in the world, but if she hadn't lifted that damned couch there really wouldn't be an issue. Let's just say it escalated from there and I kicked her out before spending a couple of hours crying.

After calming down I called her to explain how I felt about the entire thing and why I kicked her out, and told her about how I felt that she was very rude about it and asked her if she would do something like checking under the couch if she went over to a friend, which she wouldn't, as none of her friends are messy and I'm just the most terrible human being and daughter for forgetting to clean under the couch. I just hung up, and I am so tired of her bullshit.

And all this shit made me forget that yesterday was the deadline for the first round of registering for classes for the next term, which hopefully won't be that much of a problem as there's two more rounds, but I have the feeling that at least some of the courses I wanted in on are full :/

tl;dr I'm pissed at my mother who thinks I'm an awful human being for forgetting to clean under my couch.

Your mom flipping her shit over something as small as a dirty space under the couch speaks far more about her than it does about you. Her annoyance at some dirty space is a symptom of the problem, and not the problem itself.

You don't pressure someone to let you visit, and then once you're invited, act like a jerk in that person's home. You were absolutely right to kick her out. It is YOUR space, YOUR home, and if she can't respect you or your space, then there isn't really any point in her being there, is there? She isn't enjoying herself, and at the same time is making you miserable.

And the fact that she dismissed your feelings about being disrespected pretty much is the icing on the cake.

Seriously, who the hell thinks it's polite to take it upon themselves to inspect a place they aren't even paying for and then tell YOU you're doing it wrong?

It's possible she may be feeling lonely or whatever. If she is, she's going about expressing it the wrong way/taking it out on the wrong person. Or else she's narcissistic and overbearing and there must've been at least a few instances of this long before you got your flat.

Wow, your mother pressures you into inviting her over, and then she performs a housecleaning inspection and lectures you for not cleaning in an obscure and uncommon place? And she wonders why you never invite her over. That was completely unreasonable of her, and you did well in standing up for yourself by kicking her out. Nobody's moral value as a human being is linked to whether they clean under their fucking couch. It was absolutely none of her business, and it sounds like she might be a bit abusive, if she kept going on about what a terrible person and daughter she thinks you are. I hope you'll be able to establish some clear boundaries with her and limit your contact if she is unwilling or unable to respect them.

my mother does this too but I can't do a fucking thing about it because I can't afford to pay my own rent so my parents pay it.
