28: Hahaha Kataang doesn't bother me as much as Zel/Amelia. Y-Yeah seriously, how would Zel/Amelia WORK? He weighs a ton. Literally. COVERED IN ROCKS. PAIN. PAIN PAIN PAIN.

29: I -love- the fandom, but the numbers annoy the crap out of me too. Apparently it's because the names sound like those numbers? But yeah, sorry I don't SPEAK JAPANESE, I don't understand it. For the love of God. D: I love the fandom and the series, but lkdjfsklf NAMES PLEASE.

28. But he's always hard! (I once saw a fic where Zel was pissy aboutt he curse because that part of him was made out of sandstone.)

...OH LORD XDDD T-that kind of freaks me out more than anything.

M-mental images. @___@;;

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the secret. If I could remember where the fic was, I'd link you.

29 OP

(Anonymous) 2007-11-28 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
yes. teh numbers are based on puns of japanese numbers found in the names, but it's a bloody english fandom, so it makes no sence to use those numbers. I wonder how mnay peopel in teh dfandom even know what the puns are in each name? @.@

Re: 29 OP

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, that's my point. I mean, I can see why it would be easy (and even cool and 'sign that you're in the 'in' group') when you use it, but... yeah.

Re: 29 OP

(Anonymous) 2007-11-29 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Haha yeah. I know most of them already cause I'm learning japanese numbers right now in my first year course. So it actually kinda helps in a strange way @.@ Maybe it'll help me with my counting on my midterm XD! But yeah. Unless you're learning Japanese or already know Japanese it makes little sense @.@

*looks at previous comment* and my typing fails today XD!

Why does it have to be about sex...? Can't they just be in love and together because of that love? ._.

Re: 28

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
...Eh, I suppose. My mind goes to wander though. *shrug*

But yeah, I never really saw them as 'canon' as much as Gourry/Lina are canon. XD

Re: 28

[personal profile] inksmears 2007-11-28 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess most people's do. Except mine. I mean, for some pairings it does, but not for others.

I haven't seen Slayers in 24692727 years, but I DO remember Gourry/Lina being more canon than Zel/Amelia ever was. XD

Re: 28

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Haaa, well I ship Zelgadis with someone else anyhow, so yeah my mind never wondered with them. XD I-it's just more of an objective thought of how the technics would work. XD

Haha, well, I just always saw Zelgadis as your average, normal guy, who just happened to have this crappy curse. I don't think he'd sit around being lovey-dovey with Amelia even if he's in love with her, it would only increase his drive to keep looking for a cure so he could be with Amelia. I mean, in that boat scene where Amelia talks about having to give Zelgadis CPR, he does blush, which to me indicated that he DID just have normal desires. |D

Re: 28

[personal profile] inksmears 2007-11-28 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! True, true~ 8D

Aww~! Well, I always saw it less romantic and more like... I dunno. I can't describe it, but I never pictured it as a romantic boyfriend/girlfriend type relationship. XD But I agree.

Re: 28

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
B-but you can also wonder about dragons o-or that episode with the fish/human combination. Oh Lord Slayers gave me such weird mental images.

Image

...Yeah.

Hah, I don't know what it WOULD be though, b-because logicalistically, I think Amelia would absolutely annoy Zelgadis, even if he can respect her beliefs and drive. *waits for people to disagree* XD

Just for help /o

Yeah, the numbers refer to the name sounds in Japanese. I think most of the numbers cam out of the Japanese fandom. Japanese counting is super confusing though! XD with both Chinese and Japanese readings as well as counters. For the J-Fandom I bet it comes naturally, but for us non-j-fandom it's a puzzle.

Japanese counting:
1 ichi (hitotsu)
2 ni (futatsu) [English "Two" = Japanese "TSU" since there's no 'tu' sound]
3 san (mittsu)
4 shi/yon (yottsu)
5 go (itsutsu)
6 roku (muttsu)
7 shichi/nana (nanatsu)
8 hachi (yattsu)
9 kyuu (kokonotsu) [sometimes ku, depending on context]
10 juu (tou)
100 hyaku [300 = byaku]

So, TSU NA takes the TSU from 2 and the NA from Nana => 27
YA MA takes the YA from 8 and the MA for 0 => 80
HI BA RI takes the HI for 1 and the BA from 8*
GO KU DERA takes the 5 from GO and the KU from 9
MU KU RO takes the MU from 6 and KU from 9
KU RO UMU takes the KU for 9 and RO from 6

I think those are the most used ones? I've heard of 3 for XANXUS (XAN is read as ZAN in Japanese = SAN = 3) and 100 for Byakuran (100- -> hyaku, Hyaku can sometimes be read as Byaku depending on the context (like 300 is Sanbyaku instead of sanhyaku)

* - I can't think of where BA is the reading for 8 off the top of my head BUT IT IS somewhere. Sigh.

I think if more people started not using the numbers it would catch on more too? I dunno /o/ hope that was helpful and not annoying.

[identity profile] alexander.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
OTZ and I comment too late to see you linked to someone more in the know than I! OH WELL.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha xD! ♥ WELL IT'S USEFUL FOR OTHER PEOPLE WHO PASS ONTO THIS COMMENT TAIL? ♥

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha no, I know what they stand for and where I can find it, I was just saying I can see where the poster is coming from. XD

Yeah, personally I just don't bother writing it down in numbers. I know what most mean, and that's enough for me. \o/ But thanks for the explanation XD ♥

[identity profile] alexander.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
My reading comprehension is clearly low today >D;;;;

I don't mind it too much, Gundam Wing was a previous fandom of mine and I've taken some Japanese. And I do much prefer it to like KxS as how people talk about their ships, if only because the numbers are more specific XD

sob too slow ♥

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha more like it's too late for me to express myself clearly? XD AND I FULLY ADMIT TO BEING NUMBER-DYSLEXIC AND SWITCHING ORDERS AROUND. XD Mukuro would turn into Chrome so often if I were to write down numbers... orz

Haaa, Gundam Wing. Yeah, well most of the names were European, which to me made more sense than the Japanese ones. XD KxS? Y-yeah in a huge fandom like Reborn that's awfully confusing. XD I usually just write their names out in full or fandom-accepted meshes (although some tend to be really odd as well |D), like MukuHiba.

[identity profile] alexander.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
XD. It took me a while to get some of them too, like Yamamoto's took some mind stretching because I don't often think in alternative readings for Japanese numbers XD. Well, that's almost canon, right~?

The Gundam Wing fandom has Bigger Issues than just numbers too XD. Mashes are good! Though I'm so used to calling Gokudera 'Dera' in my head that I have to double take when I see Goku. ... plus Goku makes me think of DBZ.

[identity profile] comixologist.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
A-actually, the "two"="tsu" thing is incorrect. in terms of pronunciation, if a Japanese person was trying to say "two" in English, they would probably say "tsu", but that is not the part of "futatsu" that indicates two-ness.

The "two" part of "futatsu" is "futa". Otherwise "hitotsu" would also be two, which it isn't.

[identity profile] alexander.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant! Phonetically. TWO => TSU as sounds XD;

The futatsu was just there because I was going through the numbers XD

I fail at writing coherently today ):

[identity profile] comixologist.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
xD Also, byaku isn't the only alternative to hyaku, and you should probably mention happyaku (800)if you're going to confuse people with alternate counters and triple-digits.

xD Good thing we aren't talking about counters for small critters like cats and such. Even if I think the number for one (ippiki!) is adorable. xD

[identity profile] alexander.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know~ I prolly should have only included relevant information or included more irrelevant information as well. But I wasn't trying to give a lesson XD; Just an idea of where it came from. Though, the commenter already knew so it's a bit of a moot point XD;;

[identity profile] post-position.livejournal.com 2007-11-29 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
about the 'ba' in Hibari, I think it's because 'ha' can also be read as 'ba' too? At least that's the conclusion I came to. It's probably just to make it fit XD!
