What breaks my heart is in the official guidebook we find out that the last thing Comedian was doing before he died was writing a letter to his daughter saying that he loved her.

She was heavily pregnant in a war-torn country and just had the soldier who fathered the baby tell her he didn't give a shit about her and was going to leave her there to face the shame and exile of having a white soldier's baby. She was never going to be able to support the baby on her own, and no one was going to help her, and she is seriously looking down a dark fucking tunnel.

So she slashed his face.

And then he fucking murdered her and their unborn child.

I feel sad for Sally Jupiter in general, I just feel like she deserved a happier life. The comedian was a monster though, even putting aside the rape with Sally, the whole situation in Vietnam was MONSTROUS.

I feel like Watchmen fans always forget how fucked up and pretty much sociopathic the Comedian and Rorschach are supposed to be.

It's completely sad. Everything that twisted that relationship made it sad, including the idea that they actually still loved each other despite the horrible things he did to her. But that's the awfulness and the beauty of that story, that love can be utterly fucked up and still be love.

Even if she could learn to love him, I don't think he really had that in him. He could care about his daughter and he could care about her, but actually make them happy? He'd be who he was and he'd have to abandon them for long stretches. Stretches too long to be considered a good lover or father.

I felt sad for her. The Comedian didn't deserve a happy ending.
