No, they really don't.

Except...they totally do. Companies decided how to craft future products based on the success of past ones. Few people bought the one AC game that had a sole female protagonist, so the company decided it wasn't worth their time to develop female characters.

It's going to take a lot to sell the industry on the fact that female gamers are a rapidly growing demographic, but it would really help push it along if people bought the games that featured female protags.
