Personally, I liked that they didn't go MEGA TRAGIC BACKSTORY on Sam. He was just a cool veteran guy who'd gone through some shit, as opposed to really playing up the OMG SO SAD PLS CRY angle like they could've done.

But they could have made it a bit more pronounced. Wasn't it just like one throwaway line (that I can't remember)?

It didn't seem throwaway to me? It made it's point - that Sam had fought and suffered loss, a lot like Steve had. It gave them a point in common (among a few others) and it gave me a clear picture of who he was and why he was working as a counselor to other veterans.

Personally, i *like* not being beaten over the head with anvils.

I don't like being beaten over the head either, but I would like to know something about the characters presented in a memorable way.

I just asked my sis (who watched the movie with me) what she knew about Falcon. This is what she could tell me. "He was in the army and he was part of some special team who was prototyping some winged thing? All I remember was the file folder. And when there are file folders, it's always secret shit. Yeah, I don't even know if what I told you was right. That's what I put together though."

And then I asked her this after all that.

I...hate to say but....your sis didn't really pay attention if she didn't even know his *name*.

She knew him as Falcon because going into the movie she knew him as Falcon.

That seems more like her own problem than the movie's tbh.

Agreed, I loved Sam as an example of someone who's gone through a traumatic experience and came out okay on the other side and is now an awesome and well-adjusted person. Especially in contrast with Steve, who still hasn't found his footing.

Same, like I love tragic back-stories like nobody's business but I really liked how even though Sam has clearly gone through something horrible he's come out the other side alright, and hey that gives me some hope that Steve, Bucky and Natasha will be okay in the end.
