My slant was slightly different. I went into the movie really hoping for a sweet resolution of the Steve and Bucky storyline, some serious feels there, and I was tremendously disappointed. Instead, we got a 10 minute WWF smackdown in the helicarrier. So I had zero Bucky feels because they weren't written in. He was just a robot.

But the Cap and Natasha friendship? Was epic, and she kicked ass in the conference room, and Fury in the SUV? OMG. He fought like a badass, wounded and all. And Sam was a seriously pleasant surprise: I knew nothing about him coming in. So there was a lot for me to love about the movie I wasn't expecting.

There just wasn't anyone who wanted to talk about those bits. Or about feeling cheated, obviously.

I loooooved the Steve and Nat friendship. I sort of got the idea of it from the trailers but it was even better than I expected. Also I have to say that as awesome as Fury is (because Samuel L Jackson!) I never really felt connected to him as an actual character in previous films. This changed things, he actually did stuff in CA:TWS. That's not to say he didn't before, especially in The Avengers but IDK...I can't explain it? If I try to I suppose I'd say that I just liked how it upgraded him from team assembling bad ass to being actually heavily involved in the plot as well.

I had high hopes that Bucky/WS would mean we would get another strong antagonist (will not be using the word villain after I made that mistake before...) who would make it out of the film and so have potential for growth. I think the potential is there but as I said in another comment, I felt like I could've seen more and I didn't feel like I really got to "know" WS. I know fandom in general seems pleased but personally I didn't feel like there was enough establishing of the Bucky/Steve friendship in the first place so I felt like the revelation and associated feelings, even though I knew it was coming, didn't hit me as hard as it did other people. Oh well, WS will clearly be back so I'm still hopeful!

There was definitely something different about Nat in WS, she was just more there. Maybe because they were allowing her more than two word sentences, like trying to set Cap up on dates (omg). And Fury, yeah: he was integral this time, exactly.

I do hope MCU tries to develop Bucky and Nat as well. I know they had a relationship in the comics, but I'm not sure they will in MCU. Have you see this vid? It's kind of brilliant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TM10ZGfWQ6U

That's actually pretty well-made.

Where were you all when my Steve/Natasha secret was posted >:/

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Fury and Widow felt more like actual flesh and blood characters instead of walking, talking plot devices, perhaps?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
no but seriously, where are you all hanging out that people don't want to talk about the steve/natasha friendship? because i've seen plenty of people talking about it.

tumblr and lj. If there are cool discussion/posts you can rec, please do.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
i've given up on lj long ago, but for tumblr just use their search to look up the character you're interested in and go from the top users/posts on there. there are multiple fuckyeah/appreciation tumblrs for both natasha and sam afaik. i constantly see steve/sam and steve/natasha gifsets with 10k+ notes so people are definitely engaging with the material. the only problem is that tumblr sucks balls for discussion.

Thanks for the tip. And yeah, the sucking balls part is why I don't spend a lot of time there, just let stuff drift into my dash when I'm bored. I wish the designers gave a rat's ass about conversation.

yeah, it's good for instant news and pictures and stuff but man i miss the heyday of lj-based fandom. also hey, i just saw [personal profile] dazzledfirestar's reply a bit higher up in this thread, maybe you can ask them for recs for people to follow?

I'll happily talk to you about feeling cheated!
I mean, for a movie called "Captain America: Winter Soldier" there was precious little of Captain America and the Winter Soldier.
It's not that I didn't love what we got, but it felt almost more ensemble than a proper Cap movie. It made me wish they'd give Natasha a movie of her own so she can be badass front and center and let Steve have his own movie, too.
Then again, I did think that Steve+Natasha friendship was one of the best things about it. They're just so epic together, and I hope we see more of that in Avengers 2.

IKR? I think they were going for some sort of "Who is that masked man?" kinda thing, which is why Bucky was barely there in the beginning before disappearing and reappearing, but what is the point of that when probably 80% of the viewing audience knew it was Bucky? Bad choice. And I think the Nat and Cap thing was super - that was plenty of partnership; it wasn't necessary to add in Sam. I loved-loved Sam, but I think he was thrown in to make for an ensemble and a bigger action sequence (flying! explosions! woo!) at the end (multiple carriers to explode!), or maybe to get him added to the franchise. Well, Sam's awesome could fill a whole movie. Great storyline. When really, the entire finale should have focused on Steve and Bucky, with, sure, Nat and Fury confronting Redwood's character in a tense scene. That way they could have had both BAMF Steve and Bucky AND some sort of real contact b/w them. And you could even swap out the earlier Sam scene with one where Bucky hunts down Steve and spies on him. :D

I guess Cap's problem is he doesn't fly, and the only way these yahoos could conceive of making things seem really big was by adding Sam for the aerials. They should have just taken a tip from a damned Die Hard movie or two.
