Re: What was your most recent new fandom?

Considering the fact that my main fandom is Murder Rooms and my newest fandom is The Monstrumologist, this will probably be right up my alley. I do so enjoy Victorian social commentary.

The only real concerns I have are that the plot will get screwed midway but they'll proceed to drag it on towards its miserable end and that the show will get cancelled without a proper finale.

Ah. Just to say, regarding historical accuracy, they are definitely aiming at modern sensibilities, and like the penny dreadfuls, they do go for shock value over period accuracy at times (Dorian Grey in particular). However, they also put in some lovely little period touches in places as well. They're aiming more at genre trappings than period, but they've taken some pains to set it in a post-Ripper London alongside that, and Ep. 5 definitely went for mid/late-Victoriana in feel.

As for cancellation, I understand that it's already been slated for a 10-episode second season as of the start of June, so hopefully they'll keep things on track. They're very slow in shaping the plot, which on the one hand does hint towards actual planning, but on the other hand leaves the risk of drag-panic-rush as season end looms. It is, unfortunately, one of the risks of watching live :(

That's alright with me, too. Genre play is more than welcome.

You're right, and I suppose I'll just have to decide >.< I've been burnt so many times in the past two years it's unbelievable. Ahh. Well. I guess I am inclined to try, especially since it's not particularly long.

I have to say I'm glad they are slow, because I definitely prefer drag-panic-rush (as unpleasant as it is) to weird plot twists that mess everything up and make zero sense. Eyeing you, Elementary. In general, the UK popular series format strikes me as being much better than the US one (a bazillion episodes in a couple of seasons coming with no hiatus in-between).

Also, does it have any nice friendships? This may be a very good incentive.

One can only hope. I'm fairly sure from the five episodes so far that they do have a plan, but there's some weirdness because there's several subplots at once, and only some of them tie into the group's overarching quest. Victor's in particular is somewhat outside their remit. Not sure how well things will pull together later on, but we're still laying the board yet.

Hmm. Hard to say as yet, the group is still in the wary, feeling-each-out phase, and most of the longer standing relationships are ... lets call it 'dysfunctional', yes? Victorian melodrama, just a touch. The strongest friendship so far is Vanessa & Mina in backstory, while the student-mentor relationships are Vanessa & Sir Malcolm, which is extremely dysfunctional, and they're hinting at the beginnings of one with Victor acquiring a mentor, which may go better. The Creature, oddly enough, has a rather wonderful father-figure/mentor on the side, and at least one of the romantic relationships was quite warm before melodrama interrupted last ep. The group primarily runs on pseudo-incestuous family vibes, though, with Sir Malcolm as the central father figure twisting people around him. Which strongly echoes a central theme, given his and Vanessa's driving motivations and backstories, so it'll probably continue in that vein.

The problem with looking for friendships on this show is that they're throwing off sexual vibes in every which direction. Including straight-up, onscreen gay kissing between main characters, I should add, a very romantic and possessive female friendship in backstory, and also a complicated pseudo-father/daughter incest by way of family friends and demonic possession. Lust and transgression are central themes, and so far only Victor seems largely exempt from that, and even he has odd vibes in places. So ... we're not really in the friendship/teamwork phase yet?
