I couldn't agree more. Its cancerous to the trade of cartooning and animating. The popular tumblr styles - and there's several, but they all share common traits - are reflections of what modern audiences like in their cartoon art, and its beginning to seeep into and infect cartooning at large.

Your Adventure Times and your Bee and Puppycat and your Steven Universes aren't just reminiscent in their artstyles in several ways to the popular amateurish tumblr artstyles in design philosophy and composition, byt they're also tumblr-pandering in the way they're done. The writers and authors are popular tumblr celebrities, the tone and writing is tailored to the "quirky hip youth" tumblr sensibilities.

It's infectious. If we continue to let it thrive, it will overtake good design philosophy. The fact that AT is one of the single most popular cartoons of our age is genuinely disheartening when you look at how cheap and artificial it is in every sense of the word, the fact that Steven Universe is following in its stead is concerning, and the fact that B&PC can raise 800,000 dollars is disgusting. Letting tumblr's art fester and stew is a threat to good cartooning anywhere, its popularity is a testament to the overall decline of western youth's standards for entertainment and the vapidity of their life, and it needs to be stamped out by people educated in the nuances in cartooning like us before it results in an entire generation raised on this shit. We need to attack it actively and crush the will of these slackjawed "wacky" 20-something so-called cartoonists

It's garbage. It needs to be destroyed. Ignoring this vapid shit and letting it grow it will LITERALLY ruin cartooning for at least decade.

Couldn't agree more.

Sad thing is I've seen artists' art quality decline when they start adapting the tumblr-esque style. The art style's the worst, bland cuteness and has no personality of its own.

Hi, John Kricfalusi.

Not sure if satire.

For one thing, Adventure Time isn't "Tumblr" in any sense of the word at all.

I like this comment.

It's even worse because the creator bows down to these people.

I think it's too late for this to stop. Just look at Kaboom comics and all the pandering they do to the Tumblr crowd.

As a straight white guy with strong liberal leanings, I definitely err on the side of checking my privilege

this is already a disaster

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I could read past the first few lines.

It's kind of interesting how hard he confuses "we have to respect these peoples' legitimate feelings" with "we have to agree with these people that what we've done is cultural appropriation"

or w/e

This Just In: Comic Book Publishers Write For the Audience They Believe They Have, More At 11!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Man, first people called everything disney, then they called it all anime, now they call it all tumblr. Some day someone will be able to draw a cartoon without being told not to make it look attractive to the general public.

God forbid you draw what you and others like!

Y'all have totally lost the old lady in this entire thread.

I think AT is a great show (not perfect or without it's problems, but hey what is).

We could bring back the Smurfs. I am cool with that. I have huge childhood nostalgia for that cartoon. But they're all POC! And one of them is a girl! A Pygmalion girl even! And there's always a moral to the story! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. Why cartoon that is for children, why???????????????

REN AND STIMPY WASN'T THAT GOOD STOP WHINING ABOUT ANIMATION.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
You write like a try-hard idiot.

(I'm not even defending this show; I hate it. You just do)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Giving you a 9/10 because you actually got serious replies.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't have much hope for your comment once you called the stylings of those shows "cancerous", so I wasn't as disappointed by the rest of it as I might've been.
