Yup.

[SPOILERS]

I mean, the first half was great, especially the subtle/background worldbuilding of Vikings + dragons. And Valka and Stoick's reunion scene was fantastic, very emotional and touching. The flight and fight scenes were great, and very fun to watch. Most of the personal and family moments had great voice acting and animation to go with it, and were very emotionally powerful.

But when Hiccup was talking about why he would make a bad chief and mentioned that Astrid had the good-chief qualities, I was really hoping it would end either with him as not chief yet or Astrid as the next in line for chief.

Then came Valka. I and one of my friends were both pissed off that after spending a good portion of the movie going on about how awesome she is, the moment Stoick arrives on the scene and there's a battle, it all goes out the window - she goes from dancing across the backs of multiple dragons to flailing when one takes a bad turn. Really, Dreamworks, did you need the capable men/damsel in distress trope THAT badly? And then one of Hiccup's parents had to die, which felt kind of...cheap, I guess? Cheap character development and story telling. I'm glad, at least, that they didn't Fridge his mother/that she wasn't brought back just to be killed off again.

I think the whole "alpha dragon" thing kind of ticked me off, too, especially the whole 'every nest has its queen but this one is the king of them all' part. As my friend put it (roughly/paraphrased), "They can't even let females be in charge among dragons, non-human characters?"

And, while I'm always happy to see a bit of female gaze in movies, I was disappointed to see the movies play off Snotlout and Fishlegs' overt and persistent attentions on Ruffnut as comedic, and her obsessing over Erit was...excessive? Once, maybe, would have just been eyeroll worthy, but twice, and then that weird moment of apparently falling for both Fishlegs and Snotlout? That was poorly done and cheap comedy, right there.

So the action animation was fantastic, and the characters' individual and family moments were good, but the storytelling was weak and relied far too much on clichés and slapstick and not nearly enough on the ingenuity I saw in the first movie and the show.
