I think you and OP of #1 should meet each other, tbh.

I don't get hipsterish about it but I do prefer when a fanmix is mostly music I don't know because I like to use them as a way to find new music.

this is a good way of looking at it!

Agreed. Especially if the music really reflects a show. Like a fanmix for Supernatural that contains obscure rock and metal from the 70's that I've never heard before is going to interest me more than a Supernatural fanmix that contains songs from the latest top ten indie rock bands.

Same! I've found so many artists I would have otherwise never listened to through fanmixes. It's fun. :)

I don't really think of myself as a music snob, but, yeah. I'd like to see fanmixes with more obscure or less popular stuff. Someday I'll make a fanmix with King Missile. (Actually, I think I can use them in the fanmix I'm half-ass working on.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the complete opposite. I need to have at least one song I recognize before I give it a try, otherwise I have no idea what their taste is, and assume it's all bland indie fluff.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's me exactly. In the Commandments of fanmix sins, I think just filling a fanmix with whatever recent indie music you heard was cool is a much bigger crime than either of the crimes listed in secrets this week.

I kind of agree. Not that I dislike mainstream music, but something that's only mainstream music, or only from one small slice of it, and I do get kind of judgy and roll my eyes. I mean, why not go a little outside of the ordinary, I guess. It just seems like a wasted opportunity. And I mostly manage to hold back that impulse, but something about the fact that this is something that they are specifically creating gets past my defenses somehow.

I don't think less of a fanmix with only well-known music, but I'm also less likely to listen to it unless it's for a specific fandom I like. I like to use fanmixes as a way to find new music, so ones with only the same old stuff are boring.

IT'S AN ILLUSION! But a damn good one, because I would so fall into this trap. The person with the obscure track listing appears to have put more thought into her/his mix, because s/he hasn't gone with the Ol' Stand-bys. BUT MAYBE S/HE HAS SHITTY TASTE. Maybe s/he only listens to piss-poor recordings of open mic nights. You just don't know, man. You just don't know.

But you want to believe, because at least s/he's given you something fresh.

What a vile siren songs s/he plays.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
My favourite thing about (good) fanmixes is discovering new music, artists or even genre I wasn't familiar with. So yeah, if I know every song on a fanmix, it's not that I think it sucks, I'm just not interested at all.

But what do you do if a mix has mostly songs you don't know but then ONE song that's overused? Does your brain melt, then?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
I, OTOH, judge a mix incredibly hard if it consists solely of hipster songs.
pantasma: (Default)

[personal profile] pantasma 2014-06-17 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ever listen to them, or just look at the titles? Do you listen to the lyrics and music, to see if it reflects the character you have in your head, or do you put it on as background music and assess what you catch?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no one listened to my Winchester mix of unheard-of Americana bands, so maybe mainstream is the way to go. Though I’m still convinced that Dean listens to Lucero and Chuck Ragan -- the goddamn greatest sad bastard music I’ve ever heard.
